In 2024, we introduced ceramic artist Yenyu at our store for the first time.
Originally from Taiwan, she came to Japan on a working holiday, where she encountered ceramics.
After studying the craft, she continued her practice in Tajimi, Gifu Prefecture. In the autumn of that year, she left Tajimi and chose Kyoto as her new base.
Last November, when the autumn leaves were at their most beautiful, we visited her new studio.

Tucked away in a quiet alley in Kyoto, her studio was filled with a calm and composed atmosphere—quite different from the shared studio we had seen in Tajimi.
Tools neatly arranged, and time flowing gently.
Standing in this space, it felt natural to understand how the sense of calm and depth found in her pieces resonates so closely with this place.

The years she spent studying at the Tajimi Pottery School, and the time she devoted to making work in Tajimi.
Now, she is embracing change in a new environment—Kyoto.
Though her surroundings have changed, the core of her practice remains the same, and her expression feels quieter, deeper, and more refined than ever.

Fragile, yet powerful—like nature itself.
In Yenyu’s pieces, these opposing qualities coexist in quiet harmony.

Living and continuing to create in a foreign country, and choosing to move one’s base, both require great courage. Still, she continues to take action, choosing Japan as the place to pursue her path in ceramics.
The beautiful landscapes that Yenyu expresses through her work.
We invite you to take a moment to experience their quiet presence.
