VELE by Tobias Zielony

This is a photo book by German photographer Tobias Zielony, focusing on the housing complex known as "Le Vele di Scampia" in Naples. Built in the late 1970s by Italian architect Francesco Di Salvo, this structure is widely recognized for its urban design resembling "Le Vele" (The Sails). However, even before its completion, it had been occupied by the mafia. The book includes 287 carefully selected photos from the 7,000 images Zielony shot at this location, primarily at night. It explores the gap between architectural ideals and reality, depicting the lives and resilience of the residents, while highlighting the intersection of social and urban decay with human experience.

Tobias Zielony is a German photographer whose work primarily focuses on communities at the margins of society and urban landscapes. He often captures the everyday lives of young people, immigrants, and sexual minorities—individuals who are often marginalized by society—portraying their realities with both authenticity and emotional depth. While his work carries elements of documentary photography, he places great importance on his relationship with his subjects, taking an approach that respects their voices. Notably, his use of nighttime scenes and shadowy environments gives his work a rich visual and emotional depth.
