STEEL TOWN

This photobook by American photographer Stephen Shore documents his 1977 journey through the Rust Belt regions of New York, Pennsylvania, and eastern Ohio. He captured the people and landscapes of these areas as they faced industrial decline. Using a 4x5 large-format camera, Shore photographed closed factories, unemployed steelworkers, rundown bars, deserted main streets, and lovingly decorated homes. His images reveal a region that has lost its former prosperity, portraying communities on an irreversible path of change.
