Alexander Calder (1898–1976) and David Smith (1906–1965) were two of the most influential American sculptors of the 20th century. Calder introduced a new sense of movement and balance through his kinetic sculptures known as “mobiles.” Smith, by contrast, developed powerful abstract works in steel and iron, exploring the physical presence of materials and structural form. Despite their differing approaches, both artists significantly expanded the possibilities of metal sculpture and remain central figures in the history of modern art.
