fru by Kim Hui Yeon

As we approach the end of January, the days are still quite cold, despite the nominal arrival of spring. From the ceramic brand 'fru (프루)' by Korean female ceramist Kim Hui yeon, we have received sturdy and beautiful ceramics that endure the transition from winter to spring, much like the changes in nature.

About 'fru'

The works of 'fru (프루)' are expressions of the charm and beauty of ceramics through unique perspectives, inspired by landscapes along rivers with pebbles and the color palette of traditional Japanese cuisine. In addition to her own creative work, she conducts workshops. Her Instagram is filled with posts of her students' work, accompanied by words of gratitude and kindness towards her students, showcasing her supportive approach to others' creativity. Although we have met her only once, her dedication to pottery is evident even in these small details.

Why you started pottery?

Hui yeon : My major in school was Oriental painting, and I had been drawing for a long time. However, when I was about to graduate, I reflected on what I really wanted to do. It was then that I remembered my interest in pottery. Despite the difference in tools between painting and pottery, I felt the commonality of creating something by hand. Pottery became an extension of my art, and now, I create pottery to convey my own stories through clay.

About the this collection

fru-2

The orders for this collection started last spring in her workshop and shop. During the ordering process, despite language barriers, we communicated using gestures and translation apps to select shapes and glazes. The commonality between Japanese and Korean words occasionally brought laughter to our conversations. When creating her pieces, she focuses on how users will perceive and use them. She considers aspects such as proportions and sizes from the user's perspective before deciding on the design and glaze, ensuring that her pottery not only appeals to her but also serves the users well.

This octagonal plate, which creates a gentle dining atmosphere, is available in three sizes, making it suitable for various purposes. The thoughtful sizing reflects her consideration for the users, and the gentle curves on the angular plate, along with the serene glaze, reflect her personality.

"I conduct numerous experiments with small test pieces until I achieve the desired results."

All her glazes are beautiful, making it difficult to choose just one. In this collection, we have selected four different glazes for you.

Among them, I personally recommend the Stone glaze. This glaze features various shades of blue, dark green, black, and a textured finish.

Message to Japan

Hui yeon : I'm thrilled that the hard work I've invested in my small Seoul studio has yielded results, allowing me to share my ceramics beyond Korea. I'm looking forward to hearing how each of you experiences and utilizes my pottery. Much like clay solidifies through its journey, I aspire for my pottery to infuse a touch of resilience into your daily lives.
