Sophie Moran
Based in Australia, ceramic artist Sophie Moran, who was asked to create due to her unique patterns and changes in glaze. After studying humanities during her student days, she encountered ceramics while seeking a different approach to exploring connections with people and her own philosophy, gradually being drawn to its depth. She describes the process of deepening her self-understanding through vessels that combine the practical aspects of being used daily with the sensory aspects that allow her to express her thoughts and values.
Using clay with high iron content and mixing it with locally sourced stoneware clay to create texture, each piece is formed on the potter’s wheel. Patterns are drawn with a matte glaze, and lines are etched by lightly scraping off the glaze before firing, resulting in her unique and beautiful patterns.
The sharp lines drawn over the layers of glaze, which meld and create a sense of depth, add a striking accent, making the pieces attractive even from a distance. In recent years, pottery has become very popular in Australia, with an increasing appreciation for the value and creativity of handmade items, bridging people, society, and regions. This is the first time her work will be available in a Japanese shop, so please take a look.
〜A message from Sophie〜
I am honored that my work is being introduced to everyone in Japan. It makes me happy to imagine these crafts journeying from the maker to a new home. I hope the spirit of kindness that my pieces hold will be conveyed to everyone who uses them.
